Places for People has named the groundworks contractors appointed to a £246m framework split into 13 regional lots across England and Scotland.

Coinford Central and RJ McLeod secured the widest spread of places, each landing positions on six lots. M&J Evans Construction and Houlihan & Co each picked up four lots. The wider list of successful firms includes MV Kelly, Erith, Tamdown, O'Halloran & O'Brien and Chasetown Civil Engineering, alongside regional businesses such as A D Bly Construction, ATD Civils & Groundworks, I&H Brown, WM Donald and Nicol of Skene.

How the lots are split

Yorkshire is covered by a lot for the south and west of the county, while a central west lot takes in the West Midlands, Staffordshire and Warwickshire, and a central east lot covers Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire. The South East is divided between Surrey, Kent, East and West Sussex on one side and Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex on the other. Three South West lots cover Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire; Berkshire, Hampshire and Dorset; and Bristol, Devon and Somerset.

Greater London forms a separate lot, and Scotland is split into a Central Belt lot, a northern lot limited to the Aberdeen area and a second northern lot whose detailed area is not specified in the announcement.

Several firms hold places on more than one lot: Erith Group, ATD Civils & Groundworks and Stave-Con appear on both the central east lot and the South East lot covering Surrey, Kent and Sussex, while Coinford Central and Houlihan & Co feature across several southern lots. Scottish lists include Advance Construction (Scotland), Akela Construction, Andrew Strain Construction, Keystone Construction Scotland, Chap Group, JKR Contractors, TSL Contractors and Stewart Landscapes (Contracts). Other names on individual lots include Manvers Main Construction, Kingsheath Construction, Hilliard Civil Engineering (Nottingham), LMH (Civil Engineering), Ford Civil Engineering, Fred Champion Groundworks, DR Groundworks, Renelec Groundworks, Tithegrove, Dockerill Groundworks, O'Connell Contracting, SEH Ipswich, J L Knight Roadworks, Aeropark Developments and Hi-Acre Construction.

Scope of work and values

Work ranges from site clearance, bulk earthworks and foundations to drainage, utilities, roads, sewers and external works. Scottish packages also extend to house foundations, completed in-situ concrete floors, plot drainage, retaining wall foundations and ducting for electric vehicle infrastructure.

Greater London is the largest regional package at around £38m. The Berkshire, Hampshire and Dorset lot follows at £30m, with East Anglia and the northern Home Counties accounting for a further £29m.

Across the 13 lots, the appointments give Places for People a roster of groundworks contractors in each region covered, mixing national firms with smaller regional specialists.
