Founded in 1924 under the name Compagnie Française des Petroles PIC private joint participation of the French state in 1985 adopted the name of Total-CFP and only Total SA in 1991 . Following the merger with Belgian Petrofina and absorption of Elf Aquitaine in 1999, the company adopted the name of Total Fina SA and later, on March 22 of 2000 that of Total Fina Elf SA until May 6 of 2003 it was decided to retrieve the unique name of Total SA.
Total SA is the fourth group of private oil and gas worldwide and first company in France , its country of origin. Its business branches include the entire chain of the petroleum industry: exploration, production, exploration , refining, distribution , trading and shipping . In the area of marketing its 17,000 service stations in the world will stand as European market leader and co-leader in Africa . In 2004 its oil production amounted to 2.59 million barrels to its reserves to the equivalent of 11,100 barrels of oil.

In 2006 Total split its subsidiary Arkema , which includes activities related to chlorine and a host of products called “intermediate” and “high performance”.
