The Whirlpool Corporation is a multinational U.S. manufacturer of household appliances . Was founded in 1911 in St. Joseph , in Michigan , by brothers Louis, Frederick and Emory Upton, under the name Upton Machine Company . The first product to Whirlpool brand was launched in 1950 .
Its main office was moved to Benton Harbor in 1956 , again in Michigan . In the following decades the company grew, expanding internationally, and in 1988 , along with Philips , creates a joint venture called Whirlpool International , later acquired by American company totally in 1991 .
Since 2006 , with the acquisition of Maytag Corporation , until then, its main competitor in the market U.S., Whirlpool became the world’s largest producer of household appliances, surpassing Electrolux .
