Carolina Hurricanes Logo — Carolina Hurricanes are a professional team of ice hockey in the United States located in Raleigh (North Carolina). It was founded in 1997 following the transfer of the previous franchise, the Hartford Whalers. They have a Stanley Cup for the 2005-06 season. The team plays in the National Hockey League framed in the Southeast Division.
The origins of the team are in the previous franchise, the Hartford Whalers. Founded as the New England Whalers in 1972, began as one of the first teams of the World Hockey Association is one of the top teams in the league and after the demise of it, one of the four clubs that joined the National Hockey League moving to Hartford (Connecticut). However, the club did not have the same luck in the NHL and, except for a Division Championship in 1986-87, flaunted bad positions. Last year the Whalers won the playoff pass was in 1992.
In March 1997 the Whalers owner Peter Karmanos announced the relocation of the franchise at the end of the 1996-97 season, citing as the main reasons for the inability to negotiate the construction of a new stadium in Hartford. In July, Karmanos announced that the team would leave for North Carolina. The new franchise undergoes a complete makeover and renamed Carolina Hurricanes and changing their traditional colors of red and black.
