Columbia Records Logo — Columbia Records is the oldest brand name used in the sound recording, dating from 1888 . He is currently a subsidiary of the brand Sony Music. Columbia was originally the distributor and seller of the phonograph of Edison and their respective cylinders in Washington, DC , Maryland andDelaware . As was the custom of some regional companies phonographs, Columbia produced many commercial cylinder recordings in which distributed. Columbia increased its trade ties with Edison and the “North American Phonograph Company” in 1893 , and thereafter sold only records and phonographs of its own manufacture.
Columbia began selling records and phonographs recorded in parallel with the cylinder systems in 1901 . For a decade, Columbia competed with both Records company Edison cylinders and with the record company “Victor Talking Machine”, one of the three big names in the transnational industry of recorded sound. In 1908 Columbia introduced mass production of double-sided discs, with recordings stamped on both sides of the disc. This is usually done to commercial recordings of popular music and some famous singers, as the recordings of celebrities such as famous opera singers and instrumentalists, remained one sided until 1923 when it was decided (along with Victor Talking Machine) stop making these kinds of discs and devoting himself to the production of double discs.
