Goldman Sachs Logo — The Goldman Sachs Group (The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.) or simply Goldman Sachs (GS) is a group of investment banking and securities world’s largest. It was founded in 1869. During the financial crisis of 2008 U.S. and the possibility of facing bankruptcy, the 21 September of 2008, Goldman Sachs received approval from the Federal Reserve (FED) to stop being an investment bank and become a commercial bank.
Among his former employees are three Secretaries of the Treasury United States, including Henry Paulson, who served under Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, Fischer Black, author of the formula of Black-Scholes, whose work was awarded the Nobel in economics, Romano Prodi twice Prime Minister of Italy and President of the European Commission or the current president of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi.
Goldman Sachs Group was founded in 1869 by Marcus Goldman and is headquartered in Lower Manhattan in New York, 200 West Street. The company became known as a pioneer in the issuance of bills of exchange not guaranteed for entrepreneurs and was invited to join the New York Stock Exchange in 1896. It was during this time that the son of Goldman, Sachs Samuel, joined the firm, prompting the name change to “Goldman Sachs”.
In the early twentieth century Goldman played a major role in the establishment of public offerings (IPO) on the market. He came to handle the largest IPO of the time, that of Sears, Roebuck and Company in 1906. It also became one of the first companies to recruit those with Masters in Business Administration (MBA) of the major schools of economics and the practice continues today. In 1929 launched the Goldman Sachs Trading Corp., something close to a common investment fund.
