The logo is a hieroglyph which was created by Milton Glaser and that is the letter I capitalized, followed by a red heart symbol ( ♥ ), below which are the letters N and Y in capital letters, written to the source American Typewriter .
In 1977, William S. Doyle, Commissioner of the Department of Commerce State of New York, hired advertising agency Wells Rich Greene to develop a campaign of marketing for the State of New York. Doyle also recruited Milton Glaser , a graphic designer who worked on the campaign, and created the design based on the campaign publcitaria of Wells Rich Greene. Glaser expected the campaign would last only a couple of months and did the work pro bono . The innovative pop icon became a great success and has continued to be sold over the years. In the collective unconscious has been associated logo immediately to New York, and the presentation of the logo in white shirts have increased the circulation of the image, making it an easily recognizable symbol. The original concept sketches Glaser and display panels were donated by Doyle to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York .
The image became especially prominent after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the city, creating a sense of unity among the population. Many visitors to the city after the attacks purchased and wore shirts with the logo as a sign of support. Glaser created a modified version to commemorate the attacks, saying “I Love NY More Than Ever” ( I love New York more than ever ), with a small black spot in the heart symbolizing the site of the World Trade Center . The black dot indicates the location within the island of Manhattan .
