Contrary to popular belief, Hans Wilsdorf was neither Swiss, nor a watchmaker. Wilsdorf & Davis was the original name of what later became the Rolex Watch Company. These early wristwatches were sold to jewelers, who in turn put their own names on the dial. The first watches were generally Wilsdorf and Davis marked “W & D” inside the lid.

Hans Wilsdorf, along with Michael Hickman, registered the trademark “Rolex” in La Chaux-de-Fonds , Switzerland in 1908 . Wilsdorf said he wanted the brand name should be easy to pronounce for any inhabitant of the world. Some say it gives the brand name derived from “horlogerie exquise” and others say that Rolex was the sound he heard Hans to hurt and hear the ticking of his watch. The Wilsdorf & Davis was moved from the United Kingdom in 1912 to Switzerland because of how expensive it was exports of gold , silver and other precious metals. Since then, Rolex has been headquartered in Geneva , Switzerland.
