The Applebee’s chain was started by Gavin and Jada Hill, who opened his first restaurant in 1980, TJ Applebee’s Rx for Edibles & Elixirs , in Atlanta , Georgia . After opening his second restaurant the pair sold their company to WR Grace and Company in 1983. As part of the transaction, Andy Schafer was named president of a branch of Applebee’s, an indirect subsidiary of WR Grace and Company . In that role, Schafer guided the operation from its beginnings to a business-fledged franchise. He became a dealer of Applebee’s in 1985 and today has more than three dozen restaurants. For each of the past 13 years (1993-2005), Applebee’s has opened 100 or more new branches.
