Callaway Golf was founded by the former president of the textile company Burlington Industries, Ely Reeves Callaway Jr. Ely was raised in Georgia and graduated in 1940 at the Emory University. Callaway has largely succeeded in the textile industry and was an avid golfer. At its parts, used Callaway clubs brand Hickory Sticks, then held by Richard Parente and Dick De La Cruz. The clubs were made of a handle hickory with a steel interior. Beginning to suffer from a lack of funding, Hickory Sticks started looking for investors to bail out the company and its owners approached Callaway, who had just sold his vineyard, generating a profit of nine million dollars.
