Founded in San Francisco (1969) by Adrian D Alsey, Larry H illblom and Robert L ynn, the initial letter of their surnames is that we get the name of the company. The three had the idea to deliver the shipping documents in advance, by plane from San Francisco to Honolulu. Thus, customs procedures could begin before the ship reached port. The discharge time is substantially reduced so that the owners costs saved. The idea was the beginning of a new industry, the international express delivery service.

From there, take-off was immediate. In 1970, DHL was introduced on the East Coast of the United States and expanded in the Pacific in 1971. In 1974, established its first European office in London. Since 1977, DHL has been in the Middle East and in 1978 opened its first office in Germany.
