Previously, the state of Minnesota had a hockey team in the NHL, known as the Minnesota North Stars. This franchise was based in the state from 1967 until 1993, when they moved to Dallas to be called the Dallas Stars. In 1997, four years after the departure of the North Stars, the organization of the NHL decided to grant a new franqucia in that area would begin play in 2000-01.
