The idea for Staples was born in 1985, when founder Thomas G. Stemberg was working on a proposed business plan. I needed a ribbon for your printer, but could not find it because your dealer was closed for the holiday of Independence Day . His frustration at having to rely on small businesses to critical products, combined with Stemberg’s history in the food business took him to a vision of an office products superstore. 1 The first store opened in Brighton, Massachusetts in 1986.
