Washington was, along with the Kansas City Scouts, one of two expansion franchises the NHL since the 1974-75 season. The owner of the team in his first season was Abe Pollin, who also owned the Washington Bullets of the NBA and who ordered the construction of the pavilion Capital Centre to house the two teams, while the first general manager of the club was Milt Schmidt.
