Dunlop Logo — Dunlop is a manufacturer of tires and derivatives of rubber in the UK. Today, Dunlop owned by 75% to Goodyear and 25% to Sumitomo Rubber Industries. It is also a brand of tennis rackets.
Scottish inventor John Boyd Dunlop founded the Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company in 1889. The company developed the design of bicycle tires , the production derived from other companies. In 1902 he founded the company Dunlop Rubber would be devoted to the manufacture of tires, while diversifying their production began with the emergence of the first automobiles and airplanes . Throughout the 1920s, discoveries of foam latex Dunlop took to produce balls from golf to shoe tennis .
After receiving allegations of monopolistic practices after the Second World War and to experience a merger with the Italian company Pirelli in the 1970s, Dunlop suffered from financial problems and BTR bought it in 1985. In mid 1990, the Dunlop divisions were sold to other conglomerates.
Sumitomo Rubber Industries is a Japanese company Sumitomo Group , who had collaborated with Dunlop in the local market since 1909 and bought the Japanese division of Dunlop in 1963. After the bankruptcy of Dunlop, Sumitomo bought the rights to the brand of tires. After changing the name of the division of Dunlop Tyres in 1997, formed a joint venture with US- Goodyear two years later, which remains today.
Dunlop was tire supplier of the Formula 1 between 1950 and 1970, then in 1976 and 1977 seasons. The brand has registered 83 wins, eight drivers ‘titles and nine constructors’ titles. Dunlop tires are also used in drag racing , cars and motorcycle speed .
