The airline celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2007 .The airline was established on June 7, 1932 and began operations in July 1933. It was founded in association with the Airwork Services under the name of Misr Airwork. During the Second World War the Egyptian government took control of the airline and its name was changed to Misr Air in 1949. In January 1961, Misr Air merged with Syrian Airways to form United Arab Airlines (UAA) as a result of new political relations between Egypt and Syria , although this agreement was short-lived. Retained its name for a while, but eventually was replaced by EgyptAir in October 1971.
EgyptAir was the first airline in the Middle East to operate jet powered aircraft. It employs approximately 22,000 people. In fiscal 2003/2004 EgyptAir reported earnings by 303 million and 443 million Egyptian pounds for the period 2004/2005. EgyptAir owns Air Sinai and has a 60% stake in Air Cairo . EgyptAir will launch a regional jet division in April 2007. The new subsidiary will be called EgyptAir Express operate six EMB 170 in the first quarter of 2007 . Another six EMB 170 are maintained in option.
