The company was founded in 1987 under the name of McAfee Associates, named after its founder John McAfee. In 1997, following the merger of McAfee Associates and Network General , the name was replaced by Network Associates. In 2004 the company underwent a profound restructuring. During the spring of that year, the subsidiary was sold to Magic Remedy Solutions, a subsidiary ofBMC Software . During the summer, the Sniffer Technologies subsidiary followed suit, being acquired by the company called Network General (same owner’s name original). Also, the company again changed the name to McAfee to reflect its policy focused on security-related technologies.
