McAfee Logo — McAfee, Inc. ( NYSE : MFE ) is a software related to computer security headquartered in Santa Clara , California . Its best known product is the antivirus McAfee VirusScan . The company was founded in 1987 under the name of McAfee Associates, named after its founder John McAfee. In 1997, following the merger of McAfee Associates and Network General , the name was replaced by Network Associates. In 2004 the company underwent a profound restructuring. During the spring of that year, the subsidiary was sold to Magic Remedy Solutions, a subsidiary ofBMC Software . During the summer, the Sniffer Technologies subsidiary followed suit, being acquired by the company called Network General (same owner’s name original). Also, the company again changed the name to McAfee to reflect its policy focused on security-related technologies.

Among the companies that have purchased or sold is McAfee Trusted Information Systems , which took over the development of the Firewall Toolkit, which were the foundation of free software for commercial software Gauntlet Firewall, later sold to Secure Computing Corporation. As a result of control over TIS Labs / NAI Labs / Network Associates Laboratories / McAfee Research, Network Associates’ influence in the software world of open source was quite high, often resulting in parts of several operating systems like Linux , FreeBSD or Darwin , and several contributions to the name server BIND protocol and SNMP in version 3.
Preceding the TIS Labs acquisition, McAfee bought the FSA Corporation , located in Calgary , helping to diversify their products, adding to their offering antivirus software network security products and technologies of encryption . team oversaw FSA creating a series of advanced technologies at the time, as firewalls , encryption of files and products of public key infrastructure . Although these new product lines had their success, the virus remained the company’s flagship product, and which had higher growth.
On June 9, 1998, Network Associates agreed to acquire Dr Solomon’s Group PLC, Europe’s leading company in developing antivirus software. On April 2, 2003, were made with IntruVert Networks, a company dedicated to developing technology to prevent intrusion attacks. On April 5, 2006, McAfee was ahead of Symantec in the purchase of SiteAdvisor , a service that warns users about the risks of malware or spam when downloading software or filling out forms.
