Volkswagen Logo — Volkswagen (in German ‘people’s car’) is a manufacturer of automobile based in Wolfsburg, Germany. Is part of Volkswagen Group, the largest automaker in Europe. The Volkswagen Group, headquartered in Wolfsburg, is one of the leading automotive groups in the world. In 2009 the group increased the number of vehicle deliveries to customers to 6.34 million cars (2008: 6.26 million). The Group consists of nine brands from seven European countries: Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini and Scania.

The Group operates 61 production plants in fifteen European countries and more than six countries in the Americas, Asia and Africa, having around the world with about 370,000 employees producing about 26,000 vehicles or engaged in services related to the Group’s products. The Volkswagen Group sells its vehicles in over 153 countries.

In the year 2011 and following the natural disasters in Japan that led to a strong industrial recession in that country, Volkswagen would get up to second place in the global producer, remaining behind General Motors and displacing Toyota to third place, thanks to a heavy inflow of 848 million Euros (1140 million), surpassing the previous year’s income of 312 million dollars and also surpassing its projected average of $ 606 million.

The name Volkswagen is because in the 1930’s arose in Germany a project to build a car that was accessible to a large number of people. When Adolf Hitler rises to power in 1933, decided to implement a plan to promote the automotive industry, in order to relaunch their factories and make them more competitive with the English and French. This will launch a contest to employers for the award of the manufacture of so-called ‘people’s car “(Volks Wagen). Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to carry out the project whose aim was to build a simple and inexpensive vehicle that could be available to most Germans.

For now, Volkswagen announced it would buy 19.9 percent of shares in Japan’s Suzuki for a total of 1,700 million euros (about 2,500 million), thus significantly strengthen its position in Asia.
