World of Warcraft takes place within the world of Azeroth, four years after the events at the conclusion of the previous game of Warcraft, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Blizzard Entertainment announced World of Warcraft on September 2 of 2001.

The game was released on November 23 of 2004, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the franchise Warcraft. The first expansion pack The Burning Crusade was released on January 16, 2007. The second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, was released on November 13, 2008. The third expansion pack World of Warcraft: Cataclysm was announced at BlizzCon 2009 and was launched on December 7, 2010. The fourth expansion, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria was announced at BlizzCon 2011.
With 11.4 million subscribers, World of Warcraft is the game online with the most user registration, and holds the Guinness Record for the most popular MMORPG.
