The Warriors were founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors, a member of the BAA. The owner was Pat Tyrrell, who also owned the Philadelphia Ramblers team of American Hockey League. Tyrell hired Eddie Gottlieb, a promoter of basketball in the area of Philadelphia, as coach and general manager. Led by the sensational scorer Joe Fulks, the Warriors won the championship in the inaugural season, the 1946-47, beating Chicago Stags in five games (the BAA joined the NBA in 1949).
