The NBA or National Basketball Association (National Basketball Association) is the major league American in basketball training. The NBA was founded in New York on June 6th of 1946 as the Basketball Association of America . It adopted its current name in 1949 , after joining several clubs from the former National Basketball League . The opening match was a New York Knicks — Toronto Huskies , on November 1st of 1946 with the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto as a backdrop. The match was watched by 7090 spectators. The league official has offices located in the Olympic Tower on Fifth Avenue 645 from New York . Studies of the NBA Entertainment and NBA TV are located in Secaucus , New Jersey .

The Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946 by owners of major sports arenas in the Northeast and Midwest, including Madison Square Garden in New York . The 11 teams that opened the curtain in the inaugural season was 1946-47 Boston Celtics , Philadelphia Warriors , New York Knicks , Washington Capitols , Providence Steamrollers , Toronto Huskies , Chicago Stags , St. Louis Bombers , Cleveland Rebels , Detroit Falcons and Pittsburgh Ironmen .
