The franchise was founded under the name of Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, a team from the NBL who played for North Side High School Gym in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Zollner Corporation, owned by Fred Zollner was a factory which manufactured pistons primarily for cars and trucks. In 1948 , the team became the Fort Wayne Pistons, competing in the BAA. Zollner got the NBL and BAA to join and form the NBA. Since then, the Pistons began play in the NBA.
