The Independent logo — The Independent is a newspaper British published by Independent News & Media of Tony O’Reilly . It has the nickname “the indie”, while the Sunday edition is dubbed “the Sindie”. Launched in 1986 , is the youngest of all the national newspapers in the United Kingdom , with a circulation of about 250,000 copies in 2004 . While the paper tries to genuinely represent and contrast the political views of the country, has recently promoted electoral campaigns and environmental reform, and against British identity cards. It was produced by Newspaper Publishing Ltd. and created by Andreas Whittam Smith , Stephen Glover and Matthew Symonds . All three were former journalists of The Daily Telegraph who fled the regime of Lord Hartwell . Marcus Sieff was appointed the first director of Newspaper Publishing and Whittam Smith took over the newspaper.
