PlayStation 3 Logo — PlayStation 3 (also known as PS3) is the third video game console manufactured by Sony Computer Entertainment and successor to the PlayStation 2 as part of the brand PlayStation. The PlayStation 3 competes against the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and Wii of Nintendo as part of the seventh generation of video. An important feature that distinguishes the PlayStation 3 from its predecessors is its unified service for online gaming, the PlayStation Network, which contrasts with Sony’s previous policy of relying on game developers to play online.
Other important features of the console include its robust multimedia capabilities, connectivity with the PlayStation Portable (and more recently with the 4.0 update to its successor, PlayStation Vita) and its main optical disc format HD, Blu- ray Disc, as its primary storage medium. The PS3 also supports Blu-ray Profile 2.0, because it can interact online with extras for movies and games.
The PlayStation 3 was launched on 12 November 2006 in Japan, on 17 November 2006 in North America in December and March 23, 2007 in Europe and Australia. Two versions were available at launch: a model core with 20 GB of hard drive SATA 2.5 “and a professional model with 60 GB hard drive and several additional features twice as many ports as USB and backward compatibility with its predecessor games PlayStation 2. The 20 GB model was not sold in Europe and Australia, instead launched the 40gb model, which was to be extended, because it removed the backwards compatibility, but cheapened the costs. Since then, all models have made several revisions to its hardware to reduce production cost and selling price.
