After September of 2001 , with the bankruptcy and subsequent dissolution of Ansett , Qantas maintains a virtual monopoly on Australian domestic flights. Virgin Blue , a low-cost airline has managed to take part in the domestic market, so Qantas has responded by creating a subsidiary similar characteristics called Jetstar . With this measure, Qantas expects to dominate the segment of low cost and maintain its dominance in the Australian domestic market, which accounts for part of their total market.
On December 13th of 2004 , began flights Jetstar Asia Airways flies from Singapore to Hong Kong , which Qantas expects significant market share of low cost in Asia, joining battle with its main competitor in this market , Singapore Airlines . Qantas is already the second largest airline operating from the International Airport of Singapore , while Singapore Airlines is the second airline operating flights to and from Australia.
Qantas has also sought to expand into the market for domestic flights of New Zealand , first becoming part of Air New Zealand , then Ansett New Zealand . Qantas is expected to increase their participation (without being majority) on Air New Zealand . In 1993 British Airways Qantas bought 25% for 665 million Australian dollars. In September of 2004 , the value of those shares in 2003 is estimated at about 1,100 million dollars (759 million U.S. dollars). The British Airways has dropped from 25 to 18.5% due to the expansion of company stock. Currently British Airways has the maximum allowed by law to a foreign company.
