Kool-Aid was invented by Edwin Perkins and his wife Kitty in Hastings, Nebraska, United States. All experiments were performed in the kitchen of his mother. The predecessor of this mixture was a liquid concentrate called Fruit Smack.

Perkins discovered in 1927 how to remove the liquid, leaving only dust, thereby reducing shipping costs. This powder was named Kool Ade and then Kool-Aid, and was traded in on the price of 10 cents in U.S. dollars. Kool-Aid brand was registered in 1928. Due to increased product demand, Perkins moved his production to Chicago (Illinois) in 1931, to improve distribution.
