It is the largest airline in the world in terms of total operating revenues, and the third (the largest in Europe ) in terms of passenger-kilometers. Air France-KLM was created by mutual agreement of merger between Air France and KLM on May 5, 2004.
Private investors own 81.4% of the company (37% owned by former shareholders of Air France and 21% owned by former shareholders of KLM), while the French government owns the remaining 18.6%. As a result of the agreement, the participation of the Government of France Air France has been reduced from 54.4% (of the former Air France) to 44% (from Air France-KLM). Its share was later reduced to 25%, and finally to 18.6%. Therefore, the merger has resulted in the privatization of Air France.
Both airlines, Air France and KLM flights continue to operate under their traditional names, such as subsidiaries of Air France-KLM. This situation is subject to change in the future.In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2005, total operating results of Air France-KLM amounted to 19.08 billion euros , with net income of 351 million euros, an increase of 20.2% compared to the previous year. Air France-KLM is one of the most profitable companies in Europe, in stark contrast to U.S. airlines, which are still experiencing great difficulties after the Sept. 11 attacks .
In March 2005, Air France-KLM was operating 554 aircraft. At the time of the merger in May 2004, Air France and KLM together offering flights to 225 destinations in the world. In the year ended March 21, 2003, both companies together transported 66.3 million passengers. Air France-KLM is a member of the airline alliance SkyTeam . In October 2005, Air France Cargo and KLM Cargo, the two cargo transport subsidiaries of the group, announced the integration of its business. The management team set of loads currently operates from the Netherlands .
The operations of Air France-KLM are concentrated in two major hubs : the Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris , and Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam . Air France-KLM also has 2% of the shares of the flag carrier of Italy , Alitalia (November 2005). The Italian government reduced its stake in the airline, from 62 to 49%, which means that control has resigned it.
