KLM Logo — KLM stands for Koninklijke Maatschappij Luchtvaart (usually called Royal Dutch Airlines , literally from the Dutch Royal Aviation Company ) for the leading carrier in Netherlands , is a subsidiary of Air France-KLM since late 2003, established in Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam , Netherlands . Air France-KLM is part of the airline alliance SkyTeam with Delta Air Lines , Aeromexico , Aeroflot , Korean Air , CSA Czech Airlines , Alitalia , Air Europe and Air France .

KLM was founded on October 7 of 1919 , is today the oldest airline still operating under its original name. The first KLM flight was on May 17, 1920, destined from London to Amsterdam and bringing on board two British journalists and a load of newspapers. KLM owns 100% of Transavia Airlines , 100% of Martinair and 26% of Kenya Airways .

On September 30th of 2003 , KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and the French company Air France announced the merger of both airlines, forming a new company called Air France-KLM . Air France-KLM is the world’s largest company in terms of earnings, and the third largest in the world in respect of passenger / kilometers. The independence of identities is guaranteed for the next five years, but finally it is anticipated that the operations of both companies will be combined. Despite this, the old alliance of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines with the American Northwest Airlines appears to have been affected. Air France-KLM officially joined the airline alliance SkyTeam in September of 2004 .
