In 1967, the hippies Murray Pletz and Skip Yowell and Jan Lewis laid the foundation of a small family operation in Seattle , Washington laid the foundation for the outdoor brand. Murray had the patent on a backpack frame made of aluminum and Jan could not sew very well. After studying Murray promised to marry his girlfriend, Jan, and name the joint company for her when she makes a successful pack. They were successful and the brand name was created JanSport.
