A&W Logo — A & W Restaurants, Inc. is a chain of restaurants from fast food, which is noted for its beer “root beer” and “root beer sorbet.” This is a franchise fast food in the United States and Canada serving a typical fast food menu burgers and fries and hot dogs. It has several outlets with driveway (sold to step). The company name was taken from the initials of the surnames of the partners Roy Allen and Frank Wright. Currently, the chain is owned by Yum! Brands.
A&W began in 1919 in Lodi, California, when Roy Allen partnered with Frank Wright to help with the business of ‘root beer’ that had begun in that year. Their products are marked with A & W Root Beer by the surnames of their owners. Two years later, Allen bought out Wright and began franchising of their product. Their profits came from a small franchise fee and concentrate sales.
In 1960, they had 2000 stores. In 1971, began a division of beverages that supplied bottled A & W products to stores. Soft drinks are sold under this brand are root beer and cream soda, made by Dr Pepper / Seven Up, Inc. In 1989, A & W made a covenant with the chain of Minnesota Carousel Snack Bar to turn 200 locations in the chain (mostly kiosks in shopping malls) to A & W Hot Dogs & More. Some A & W Hot Dogs & More still in operation today.
In the United States and Southeast Asia, A & W is currently owned by the company Yum! Brands, Inc. The majority of A & W centers that have opened in the U.S. in recent years has been done with one strand of Yum! — Long John Silver’s, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken.
