Their biggest star was the pitcher Nolan Ryan, known as “The Express”. Their biggest rivals in the National League are the Atlanta Braves and the division rival St. Louis Cardinals.
The arrival of professional baseball to Houston began in 1956, thanks to the dream of George Kirksey, William Kirkland and Craig Cullinan, who formed the HSA (Houston Sports Association), with the aim of attracting a baseball team. After discussing the project with Major League Baseball’s response was, “Build a stadium and then we talk about the team.” sausage.
During the summer of 1959, the search for land on which to build the stadium began at the same time Bob Smith made a very important member of HSA. Smith introduced his good friend and former Harris County Judge and Mayor of Houston, Judge Roy Hofheinz, the HSA. Hofheinz gave him the idea for Smith to use his land to build the stadium. With Kirksey, Cullinan and Smith involved in bringing the baseball team to town, Hofheinz worked on details and visions of futuristic stadium which would be unique. “I knew that with high temperatures, humidity and rain, we needed a roof stadium that would be of multiple uses,” said Hofheinz. “We wanted a stadium that was a haven for fans, and it was also used for other sports events.”
