New York Mets Logo — Metropolitan New York or New York Mets are a team of Major League Baseball based in Flushing, Queens New York. They are part of the Eastern Division of the National League. In 1957 the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants left New York to settle in California, leaving the largest city in the United States without a team in the National League. Two years later, on July 27th of 1959 the attorney William Shea announced the formation of a third major league baseball league, the Continental League.
After a year of discussions, in 1960, Shea and other Continental League organizers reached an agreement with the established league. It was agreed to abandon the creation of a third league and instead expand the existing league with two teams each. The city of New York hosted one of these new teams, whose principal owners were Joan Whitney Payson, Charles Shipman Payson. More
