Star Alliance Logo — Star Alliance is an airline alliance founded in 1997 by five airlines . Currently has 26 airlines worldwide. To 4023 aircraft , Star Alliance operates daily flights to 1,160 21,000 airports in 181 countries (as of April 2011 ) Star Alliance was the first partnership of several airlines and competes with Oneworld and SkyTeam .
On May 14th of 1997 , five airlines from three continents — United Airlines , Lufthansa , Air Canada , Thai Airways International and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) — joined to create the first airline alliance , Star Alliance . The next day, on May 15th of 1997 , the new alliance hired the advertising agency Young & Rubicam Advertising to publicize the consortium of airlines, for that spent a total 25 million U.S. dollars . The five airlines began to share the same logo and new slogan : “The Airline Network for Earth” (in Spanish : “The airline network for Earth “), in order to unify the brand image. The airline Brazilian Varig joined the alliance in October of that year.
In March 1999 , the airline Australian Ansett Australia airline and New Zealand Air New Zealand became part of the alliance. After the union of these two airlines , Star Alliance was offering 720 destinations in 110 countries with a fleet of 1,650 aircraft. On October 23 of 1999 , joined the airline Japanese All Nippon Airways . That same year, also created the first direct rival Star Alliance, the airline alliance Oneworld , founded by the airlines American Airlines , British Airways , Cathay Pacific and Qantas .
In late 2010 , the airline india Air India delayed its entry into Star Alliance, the entrance being planned for summer 2011 . Also in 2010 , the airline Colombian Avianca , next to the El Salvador TACA were admitidias in Star Alliance Sign in mid- 2012 . Also a former member of SkyTeam , the airline Panamanian Copa Airlines was admitted to enter Star Alliance in mid- 2012 . On December 13, 2011, Ethiopian Airlines joined the Star Alliance network of airlines adding five new countries in Africa and 24 destinations. In early January 2012, Continental Airlines formally leaves the partnership after completing its merger with United Airlines . Little time passed for another airline left the alliance, this is the January 27, 2012, as the Spanish airline Spanair left the alliance after the financial collapse within the company and cease operations. After these significant losses for the alliance, Star Alliance was a total of 26 airlines in its route network to March 2012.
