On May 14th of 1997 , five airlines from three continents — United Airlines , Lufthansa , Air Canada , Thai Airways International and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) — joined to create the first airline alliance , Star Alliance . The next day, on May 15th of 1997 , the new alliance hired the advertising agency Young & Rubicam Advertising to publicize the consortium of airlines, for that spent a total 25 million U.S. dollars . The five airlines began to share the same logo and new slogan : “The Airline Network for Earth” (in Spanish : “The airline network for Earth “), in order to unify the brand image.
