Hong Kong International Airport Logo — The Hong Kong International Airport is the main airport serving the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong in the People’s Republic of China . Opened in June 1998, is next to the Great Man-Made River of Libya one of the two most expensive engineering projects in history, carried out by Foster and Partners . Is the new airport, replacing Kai Tak International Airport , closed in 1998 and where an Olympic village was built for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
The facility was built from a small island, Chek Lap Kok , which was devastated gradually pouring their waste on the sea to catch up and form an artificial island bigger. Due to its location on the island, the airport is also known locally as Chek Lap Kok Airport .
Has the capacity to carry up to 35 million passengers a year and is the primary hub for Cathay Pacific , Dragonair , Hong Kong Express Airways , Hong Kong Airlines , Oasis Hong Kong Airlines and Air Hong Kong . Its air terminal was designed by architect Norman Foster .
